RWTH Aachen University is the first university worldwide which operates the "Tivoli Identity Manager" (TIM) of IBM. TIM allows the stand-alone administration of user accounts for different services of the RWTH Aachen University. This software supports the processes of the identity management at the RWTH Aachen University. This means, with TIM you can administrate the services of the RWTH Aachen University by yourself by using a web interface.
The identity management supports the whole life cycle of important IT-based services, which can be used by a person at the RWTH Aachen University.
The identity management contains the following key aspects:
Thus, the data is stored at one location and a multiple data management is not necessary. You have the advantage that service processes, like change of your address, are simplified. Only with this the continuity of service can be guaranteed.
Continuity of service means, that the user gets a initial account and password with the first registration at TIM. These account data will be obtained, if the person changes its relationship to the RWTH Aachen University. Only the rights stored at TIM must be altered.
With the introduction and the development of the identity management, the Studierendensekretariat, the Personalstelle and the library work with the same data. This means, if an employee who is also matriculated as a Ph.D student, changes its address at the library, this change will be adopted by the Studierendensekretariat an the Personalstelle. Also the change of special contact data (e.g. change of email or name) will transferred to all connected services (e.g. E-Learning).
As a new employee or student you have to do the initial registration: http://www.rwth-aachen.de/go
Activation of new services with one click.
More and more electronical services are available at the university. First there were computing nodes, then email, then dial in, this list grows permanently. All these services normally use an electronical authentication of the user. For this data, like name, institute and phone number is necessary.
With the introduction of TIM in July 2004, the distributed data of the user administration are merged and administrated in one system. With the comparison of the accounts of the student and employee administration is is assured that the set of services of a role of a person at the university are adjusted. With this the amount of unused and dispensable accounts is impaired, but it is also assured that the use authorisations will be kept.
This means for the user, that he can use a central place to administer his services. TIM is responsible for the generation and deletion of user informations in case of a change. TIM reduces the possibility of failures by using a manual administration.
