Installing the TSM client software

  1. Download the client software
  2. Install the client software
  3. Upgrades and updates
  4. Determine client version
  5. Go to configurations

The TSM client has to be installed under the administrator- (Windows) or root user account (Unix).

Download the client software

First of all the client software has to be downloaded and saved locally. At the moment there are installation packages available for the following operating systems:

Betriebsystem aktuelle Version alle Versionen
Windows x32 download download
Windows x64 download download
Windows IA64 download download
Linux x86 download download
Solaris SPARC download download
Solaris x86 download download
AIX 32bit download download
AIX 64bit download download
Mac OS download download
Novell Netware download download

To install the client the following files are necessary (actual version 6.1.3.0):

Operating system file
Linux x86 6.1.3.0-TIV-TSMBAC-LinuxX86.tar
Windows x32 6.1.3.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exe
Windows x64 6.1.3.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX64.exe

Besides the client several additional language packages can be installed (e.g. 6.1.3.0-TIV-TSMBAC_DEU-WinX32.exe). These packages only contains the language extension. The main client (e.g. 6.1.3.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exe) has to installed in advance in any case, otherwise installing the additional package leads to an error.

No (longer) supported operating systems

The following operating systems are no longer supported by TSM:

Operating systems last version all versionen
Windows 95/98 download download
Windows NT/ME download download
Irix download download

Install the client Ssftware

After downloading the client software the package eventually has to be extracted. If it is available as a tar-archive, it can be extracted by the command:

	tar -xvf <datei.tar>

To install the client follow these instructions:

Operating system command
Windows

double click on the TSM icon to start the wizards:

install backup/archive component

Linux

rpm -ivh TIVsm-API.i386.rpm TIVsm-BA.i386.rpm gskcrypt32-8.0.13.4.linux.x86.rpm gskssl32-8.0.13.4.linux.x86.rpm

(please mind the necessary requirements concerning the library libstdc++)

Solaris

pkgadd -d ./TIVsmCapi.pkg TIVsmCapi
pkgadd -d ./TIVsmCba.pkg TIVsmCba

AIX smit install
Novell Netware use NWConfig.NLM
Mac OS double click on the "TSM installer" icon

More precise instructions are to be found in the client's downloading directory. You can find further information about the installation of the TSM client and an example installation on a Windows system at the documentations of the advanced trainings (slides, script).

Requirements to install the TSM client on Linux systems

To install the client on Linux systems the library libstdc++ is required in a special version. This library is normally not installed on newer systems by default. To install the client the required version of the libstdc++ has to be installed as well. You can find the compat-rpm-packages (e.g. compat-libstdc++-33.i386) for the different distributions on our installation- and update server

Upgrades and updates

In order to always use the newest version of the TSM client, updates should be made regularly. If older systems are used, it can occur that not all the requirements are fulfilled. In this case an older version of the client can be use as well. To update the client regard the following:

  • Data that has been saved or archived with TSM client 6.1 cannot be restored with an older version of the client (version 5.x). Therefore you need at least a TSM client version 6.1
  • Data that has been saved or archived with the TSM 5.5 client needs at least a TSM client version 5.4 when restoring it.
  • Data that has been saved or archived with the TSM 5.4 client needs at least a TSM client version 5.3 when restoring it. If the data was stored using 128-AES encryption (available since TSM client 5.3), then at least a client 5.3 is needed when restoring this data
  • Data that has been saved or archived with TSM client 5.3 needs at least a TSM client version 5.2 when restoring it. Attention: if the data was stored using 128-AES encryption (available since TSM client 5.3), then at least a client 5.3 is needed when restoring this data
  • Data that has been saved or archived with TSM client 5.2 needs at least a TSM client version 5.1 when restoring it
  • Data that has been saved or archived with TSM client 5.1 cannot be restored with an older version. Therefore you need at least a TSM client version 5.1
  • Data that has been saved or archived with TSM client 4.1 cannot be restored with an older version of the client (version 3.x). Therefore you  need at least a TSM client version 4.1

Determine client version

The version can be determined in two ways:

  1. Using the commandline and dsmc
  2. using the grafical client dsmj

The command line client dsmc shows the version after calling it. In the grafical client the version can be seen selecting Help -> About TSM

Attention: When calling the client the configuration file(dsm.sys / dsm.opt) must exist and be adapted

Go to configurations

Depending on the usage of the client the configuration has to be adapted to backup or archive.
