Applications at the Grid

In the following you find a list with the application, which are integrated at the present time. You will also find short instructions:

Diese Liste sollte im Laufe der Zeit immer länger werden. This list should grow in the course of time.

POV-Ray

POV-Ray is a free available 3D rendering software. You can render scenes and movies. Further information about POV-Ray can you find on http://www.povray.org. A POV-Ray render job consists of several files:

  1. One .pov file, this file includes the scene description
  2. One .ini file, this file includes instructions for the renderer
  3. Include files, they are required for the scenes
  4. Textures and other required files

If you setup a POV-Ray job you will be asked for one .ini file and one .zip file, that contains all other required data. This means that the .zip file contains the .pov file and all includes and textures file which are needed by the scene. The .zip file should not contain any directories, except the directory structure is required by the .pov file.
This separation of the .ini file and the other files has the advantage, that you do not have to send the scene including includes and textures again, if you change the instruction for the renderer (e.g. resolution, frame range, etc.).
Both files must be uploaded via the filemanager.

3DS-POV

This application was developed in cooperation with RWTH-CAAD. 3DS-POV handles .3ds files created with 3d Studio Max. But instead of the 3D Studio Max renderer, the POV-Ray renderer is used. For this the 3ds scene is converted into the POV-ray format and then submitted as POV-ray job. Further information can you find under www.discreet.com.

Gaussian

Gaussian is a program package for the semi empiric and ab initio-MO-computing. Because of the large scale of the Gaussian software, job can only be executed on computers on which the software is installed completely. This is normally the cas on computer of the Center for Computing and Communication.

Conf95

Global optimization of crystal structures with the help of powder X-ray diffraction data, see description.

CPMD

CPMD CPMD (Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics) is a quantum mechanical molecular dynamics program, it uses the so called Dichtefunktionalmethod, to describe the distributions of electrons in a molecule. This method is much faster than any other methods. With this method it is possible to calculate molecular dynamics.

Maya

Maya is a Oscar wining, professional software for 3D modeling, animation and rendering. Maya supports the whole production workflow and provides with it feature set, tools for the creation of creative, digital content. Rendering of Maya jobs within the NRW Grid is suited for large rendering jobs like movie sequences. A Maya job
consists of:

  1. One Maya project file (.ma or .mb). This file includes scene information and rendering settings.
  2. Arbitrary many external files, like textures, shader etc.

If you setup a Maya job you will be asked for one project file .ma/.mb (step 1) and one .zip file (Step 2), that contains all other required data. In no external files are required, no .zip file must be uploaded. If you render a movie sequence you will be asked for the frame range.
All settings mentioned in the project file will be considered. The only restriction is that movie sequences can not be rendered directly to the avi or SGI movie format.

Propose new applications

To make the Grid more and more interessing, the users are asked to propose application, which can be integrated into the Grid.

The following attributes are required for the integration into the Grid:

  • large computing time
  • demountable into a lot of independent tasks
  • free available client software
  • a client for Windows and Linux should be available
  • the client uses only the console for input and output

If you now a good idea for an application, please contact us with a short commented propose. Then we will see what we can do.
