Linux installation server

The Center for Computing and Communication operates a installation server with several Linux distributions. The server can be used for free by the institutes, facilities and residential accommodations.

At the moment the following distributions are provided:

  • Fedora 10, 11, 12 and 13
  • SuSE Version 10.0, 10.1 ,10.2, 10.3, 11.0, 11.1, 11.2 and 11.3
  • Scientific Linux Version 4.4, 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2
  • CentOS Linux Version 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4  and 5.5

With this server it is possible to install different Linux distributions over the network. Only the first installation CD is needed. The Center for Computing and Communication puts the latest installation CDs on the server and they can be accessed by using one of the following protocols:

  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
  • NFS (Network File System)
  • HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

These three protocols are the most common ones and they are supported by the distributions for a network installation.

The server can be accessed by using the following domain name installc1.rz.rwth-aachen.de or by using the IP: 137.226.33.213.

To install one of the mentioned distributions over the network you need the following informations about the paths of the different distributions. The distribution can be found by using the following paths:
/export/<distributionsname>/<distributionsname>-<distributionsversion>/cd1

For Fedora 12: /export/fedora/fedora-12/cd1
For SuSE 10.3: /export/suse/suse-10.3/cd1

For a network based installation the first installation CD is necessary and must be made by the user.

You can find the instructions of a network based installation of a Fedora system in this manual.

More informations about the installation can be found on the website of the provider of the distribution.
