Together with Michael Klemm, Senior Application Engineer, Intel, Christian Terboven, Deputy Head of HPC Group, RWTH Aachen University, published an interesting article in the current issue of Intel’s Parallel Universe magazine. “Multicore is here to stay.” This single sentence accurately describes the situation of application developers and the hardware evolution they are facing. Since the introduction of the first dual-core CPUs some 10 years ago, the number of cores has kept increasing till the installation of our first Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessors providing 60 cores with 4 threads each imposing new requirements on the parallelism of applications to exploit the capabilities of the hardware. Eight teams from USA, Korea, China, and Germany tried to prove their knowledge and skills in parallel computing in the "Intel Parallel Universe Computing Challenge" competition organized by Intel at SC13. The matches consisted of two parts. The "Trivia Challenge" presented fifteen multiple-choice questions about parallel computing, computer history, and the SC conference itself. In the "Coding Challenge" the teams were given ten minutes to parallelize and optimize a piece of code not known to them in advance. The amount of points received was determined by the speed-up achieved on Intel Sandy Bridge and on Intel Xeon Phi respectively. The German "Gaussian Elimination Squad" was formed by associates of various institutes from the Gauss Alliance. In the end, the team won after defeating in various matches the Chinese "Milky Way" team, the team from Seoul National University, and the "Coding Illini" team from the University of Illinois and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). The prize from $25.000 was donated in full to the Philippine Red Cross. The victory of the "Gaussian Elimination Squad" signals the competence in HPC of the German centers. Read more at

Installed last April at the Center for Computing and Communication, the new RWTH compute cluster achieved rank 32 on the latest Top500 list of the world's fastest computers. The corresponds to rank 10 within Europe and rank 4 in Germany after two systems in the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) and a more experimental system at the Frankfurt University.
Installed by the company Bull, the cluster comprises over 1700 compute nodes with some 28,000 processor cores and 91,6 TB of main memory. Two file systems with 1.5 PB each provide fast access to online storage with up to 19 GB/s of bandwidth.
With 219,8 TFlop/s of measured performance, the new system is four times faster than the existing 800 compute nodes of the previous RWTH Compute Cluster. Currently the Cluster offers more than 350 TFLop/s of peak performance for education and research....view article
