...view articleDisruptions to the RWTH Email Service [04.02.2012]
Thursday night the RWTH mail server was abused to relay large quantities of spam email, which led to disruptions to the University's email services.
Now, however, the system has resumed processing emails, but some users may still be subject to constraints. If your email client is capable of receiving emails but not of sending them, please use the RWTH webmailer at
http://webmail.rwth-aachen.de.
Using the webmailer, you should not encounter any problems sending your emails. Of course we are working on making the regular email system fully operative again as soon as possible.
For technical details, please visit our
website informing on disruptions to the University's IT service.
As far as we know, no emails have been lost. It is possible, however, that outgoing RWTH email is currently being blocked or even discarded by some external sites and email servers. For this reason, if you have sent out highly important emails on Friday, we advise you to make sure that the addressees have received them.
If you have any further questions, please contact our service desk at
servicedesk@rz.rwth-aachen.de .

RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) have pooled contingents of their high-performance computers and supercomputers, thus establishing the so-called JARA-HPC partition. All scientists of RWTH Aachen, Forschungszentrum Jülich and German Research School for Simulation Sciences (GRS) will for the first time have exclusive access to approximately 600 TFlops of computing performance on supercomputers. Applications for this computing time period starting on May 1st, 2012 must have been submitted until February 29. For further information see

Research about aircraft noise was the main topic of the visit. Harry Voigtsberger, minister of economic affairs, energy, construction, living and transport of North Rhine-Westphalia, just visited the Center for Computing and Communication of RWTH Aachen University. After the address of welcome of RWTH Aachen University
prorector Günther Schuh research about noise and aircraft noise was the main subject. The speakers were Prof. Rolf Henke, board of directors for aeronautical research of the
german center for aeronautics, short DLR. Following Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eike Stumpf of
the institute for aeronautics and Univ.-Prof. Michael Vorländer of
the institue of acoustics introduced to their actual projects. The head of the
Virtual Reality Group of the Center for Computing and Communication Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Torsten Kuhlen presented a simulation demonstration to Mr. Voigtsberger in the CAVE: Thus the minister got the experience of

The HPC Group of the RWTH Aachen University offers this fall (October 11-13) a Tuning-workshop with hands-on. The focus of this workshop is the optimization of parallel programs for clusters-systems. We will show different tuning opportunities and give an introduction to the Intel Trace Analyzer and Collector.
Further information and details to the registration can be found on our course-website.
...view articleNew RWTH supercomputer on Rank 32 of the worldwide Top500 list [27.06.2011]

Installed last April at the Center for Computing and Communication, the new RWTH compute cluster achieved rank 32 on the latest Top500 list of the world's fastest computers. The corresponds to rank 10 within Europe and rank 4 in Germany after two systems in the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) and a more experimental system at the Frankfurt University.
Installed by the company Bull, the cluster comprises over 1700 compute nodes with some 28,000 processor cores and 91,6 TB of main memory. Two file systems with 1.5 PB each provide fast access to online storage with up to 19 GB/s of bandwidth.
With 219,8 TFlop/s of measured performance, the new system is four times faster than the existing 800 compute nodes of the previous RWTH Compute Cluster. Currently the Cluster offers more than 350 TFLop/s of peak performance for education and research.
